Stride for secularism with TFS at the Relay for Life!

This spring, the Triangle Freethought Society has gotten national press for our Out of the Closet billboard campaign, our campaign to humanize freethinkers for the local community, as well as encouraging like-minded individuals to join us. The more we can be ‘out and proud’, the more accepted we will become in society!

Another major goal of TFS is to support sound science education, including scientific research and developments that will make ours a better world to live in. Working together to improve this world for those who come after us is something that I think most of us can get behind. For this reason, TFS became actively involved in Relay for Life in June of 2010. We were a fledgling team of only about 10 people, but we managed to give the veteran teams some serious competition by raising over $8,000 towards cancer research and prevention.

Impressive fundraising aside, our group really enjoyed our Relay experience last year! There were a number of contests and entertaining shows through the night, and our Pizza Booth was a popular stop on the track. It was truly an enjoyable evening. Most of us stayed out there all night, talking and laughing and walking together (some even ran!) on the track. It was truly an enjoyable evening.   In the morning, we got an extra energy boost as we celebrated winning a number of awards, and were among the top “Platinum” fundraising teams.

So it is with great excitement and anticipation that we announce our plans to participate in the Relay for Life of Brier Creek/RTP at Leesville Road High School on June 3rd and 4th! Already we have nearly doubled the size of our team from last year, but we are definitely seeking out more team members to help us at the Relay and to raise more money towards this cause.

This year we plan to take away top prize for the most fundraising, and to be “Most Spirited,” once again, while having an amazing night. We will arrive to begin setting up at about 4:30 pm on Friday the 3rd. Opening ceremonies begin at 7 pm, with the Kid’s Walk activities starting at 7:30. At 9 pm a touching Luminaria/Remembrance ceremony will be held. The remainder of the night will be filled with taking turns on the track, hilarity under our TFS team tent, and of course, supporting an extremely worthwhile cause.

News flash: Our group is currently in the lead for fundraising, closing in on our $10,000 goal every day!

Please join us! The more the merrier, and I guarantee you a great time! If you can’t become a team member for whatever reason, please consider donating to our team. You can do both at the following link: http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?pg=team&fr_id=33455&team_id=834522

Please note that this year our Relay event will be conducting the Cancer Prevention Study 3 (CPS-3). According to the organizer, Bob Schechner, we are the only Relay event that will be having this opportunity available in eastern NC.  Please note that you do not have to be a Relay participant to be a part of this study. All you have to do is show up between the hours of 6 and 10 pm to take part in the study.
