FAQ
- What is the FFRF and what is its connection to TFS?
- The national Freedom From Religion Foundation is a nonprofit organization which works to educate the public on matters relating to nontheism, and to promote the constitutional principle of separation between church and state. The Foundation is the nation's largest association of freethinkers (atheists, agnostics and skeptics) with more than 15,500 members.
Since 1978, the Foundation has acted on countless violations of the separation of state and church, and has taken and won many significant complaints and important lawsuits to end state/church entanglements.
Triangle Freethought Society is an official chapter of FFRF, voted in at the November 2009 FFRF national convention.
- Must I be a national FFRF member in order to join TFS?
- No but it's a good idea and we would encourage it! FFRF is a very successful pro-secular organization to support with your membership, and they have an excellent monthly newsletter. You do have to be a member of FFRF in order to vote on TFS board members, constitutional changes, and other decisions.
- Why do I have to pay dues for TFS when I am already a member of the FFRF?
- Although we are a chapter of FFRF, we are not funded by them, other than a very small subsidy per FFRF member that is sent to us each year. Although we will get some support for projects such as the Billboard campaign, we must do our own fundraising for the most part, and running an organization that undertakes projects and regular meetings is not free. We need to pay for mundane items like postage and paper as well as for our post office box and projects like the Solstice display.
As we get better at raising funds as an organization, dues will become less important as a source of income, but paying dues is a way to ensure that members are committed enough to make a small donation to our work each year. Also, dues requirements, along with our membership application process, serves to discourage potential trolls and disruptive elements who might choose to join TFS in order to harass us.
- Why must I be a member in order to volunteer on a committee?
- Committee leaders and members often gather in private homes, and sometimes undertake project work that must be kept confidential until it is ready to be made public. In order to protect the privacy and safety of our members, and to ensure that leadership positions are given only to those who are committed to our principles, we generally allow only members to take part in committee work and to attend members-only activities. However, for certain on-off types of work, such as graphic designs or articles, we may welcome contributions from non-members. Wed rather have you join us, though!
