Secular volunteers work to improve the world not despite but because of what we hold true. In the absence of a supernatural protector, we are all we have. That's the humanistic imperative—empathy and compassion, followed by an urgent sense of responsibility to help those who share my fate but not my fortune. I simply must do what I can. Dale will speak about Volunteers Beyond Belief, a new national network of secular volunteers of whom the Triangle Freethought Society is a pilot team, and address the growing humanist presence in philanthropy.

Dale McGowan left a 15-year career as a college professor in 2006 to pursue writing full-time. He edited and co-authored Parenting Beyond Belief and Raising Freethinkers, the first comprehensive resources for nonreligious parents. He writes the secular parenting blog The Meming of Life, teaches nonreligious parenting seminars across the United States, and serves as executive director of Foundation Beyond Belief, a humanist charitable foundation based in Atlanta. In September 2008 he was named Harvard Humanist of the Year by the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard University.

The Triangle Freethought Society (TFS) is a membership-based, nonprofit education and advocacy organization dedicated to issues surrounding nontheism. Our membership is made up of nontheists, post-theists, atheists, agnostics, freethinkers, skeptics and humanists living and working in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and surrounding areas. We are the local chapter of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), a national member-organization based in Madison, Wisconsin.

Our main purpose is to stand up for the separation of church and state as guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Additionally, we work to:

  • Ensure that non-religious people enjoy the same rights as religious citizens.
  • Raise awareness and educate the general population about the concerns and issues facing the nontheist community.
  • Protect reason-based and scientific education within our school systems.
  • Engage in organized charitable and community improvement projects.
  • Create a sense of community for the nontheist population in our geographical area and beyond.

TFS is also an affiliate organization of the American Humanist Association (AHA).

Dale was great

I really enjoyed Dale's presentation. He discussed Foundation Beyond Belief and how/why people, both religious and non-religious, donate and support charitable organizations.

In a world where we're constantly and incessantly asked to give, give, give, it can be confusing, frustrating and ultimately disappointing - I want to help, but I don't want to see my money going to support ridiculous overhead and/or ridiculously large CEO salaries.

Foundation Beyond Belief offers some well-thought-out options to be able to give safely, and give as non-believers, helping to raise awareness of the many of us who are good for goodness' sake and/or good without gods. I am pleased with what I learned Monday.
