Over the past few years, with the rise of the “New Atheism,” interest in freethought and humanism is growing. And the more recent billboard and bus ad campaigns have stoked the fires of enthusiasm. So how can we benefit from this secular "coming out?" And how can our groups capture this interest to help their memberships grow? This lecture and PowerPoint presentation provides an illustrated history of the exciting, sometimes amusing, and stunningly successful advertising and media campaigns of various organizations in the community of reason. And it points the way for taking advantage of the exciting times in which we live.
Fred Edwords has a long history in organized humanism. For 15 years he was executive director of the American Humanist Association and for 12 years editor of The Humanist magazine. He is past president of Camp Quest, a summer camp for freethinking children, and has served on the board of the International Humanist and Ethical Union and the founding board of the National Center for Science Education. As a continuing voice for humanist ideas, he has, over the past thirty-five years, appeared on national and local television in the United States and Canada, been interviewed on radio and for newspapers around the world, and has lectured in North America, Europe, and India.
Today he serves as national director of the United Coalition of Reason, an organization founded in 2009 that works to foster cooperation among local groups in the community of reason and launch billboard and bus ad campaigns to raise the public profile of such groups. He also serves on the faculty of the Humanist Institute and is national director of the International Darwin Day Foundation.
Our main purpose is to stand up for the separation of church and state as guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Additionally, we work to:
- Ensure that non-religious people enjoy the same rights as religious citizens.
- Raise awareness and educate the general population about the concerns and issues facing the nontheist community.
- Protect reason-based and scientific education within our school systems.
- Engage in organized charitable and community improvement projects.
- Create a sense of community for the nontheist population in our geographical area and beyond.
TFS is also an affiliate organization of the American Humanist Association (AHA).
