He is founder and president of the Secular Coalition for America. He founded the Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry in Charleston, South Carolina, and served as founder and faculty advisor to the College of Charleston Atheist/Humanist Alliance student group. He is a Humanist Celebrant and board member of the American Humanist Association, as well as advisory board member of the Secular Student Alliance and member of the Advisory Council of Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
Herb has appeared in a number of debates, including one at the Oxford Union in Oxford, England on the topic “Does American Religion Undermine American Values?” He has spoken at numerous freethought conferences and has given sermons at Unitarian churches. He has a chapter called "Inerrancy Turned Political" in the anthology The Fundamentals of Extremism, and is an "On Faith" panelist for the Washington Post online.
Herb has has a new book out, titled “Candidate Without a Prayer: An Autobiography of a Jewish Atheist in the Bible Belt.” He will be happy to sign copies after the talk.
Born in Philadelphia, Herb Silverman received his Ph.D. in mathematics from Syracuse University and is Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at the College of Charleston. He has published over 100 research papers in mathematics journals, a couple of books on complex variables, and is the recipient of the Distinguished Research Award.
Our main purpose is to stand up for the separation of church and state as guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Additionally, we work to:
- Ensure that non-religious people enjoy the same rights as religious citizens.
- Raise awareness and educate the general population about the concerns and issues facing the nontheist community.
- Protect reason-based and scientific education within our school systems.
- Engage in organized charitable and community improvement projects.
- Create a sense of community for the nontheist population in our geographical area and beyond.
TFS is also an affiliate organization of the American Humanist Association (AHA).
